Indole

Indoles are a chemical class of organic compounds derived from the core amine structure, consisting of a fused benzene and pyrrole ring system. This ring system lies at the heart of serotonin and its many mimics. The tryptamines, and through them the lysergamides, ibogalogs, and beta-carbolines, are all elaborated indoles, so the family underlies a large share of serotonergic psychoactives. The fused benzene-pyrrole ring system is the defining structural feature of the class.
