Sedative-hypnotics are psychoactive substances that usually cause sedation, drowsiness, or sleep. This class holds several families of depressant drugs with different mechanisms: benzodiazepines, barbiturates, alcohol, GABA analogs, and some substances that act on voltage-gated calcium channels. Opioids have their own category.
