Lithium
Lithium is an alkali-metal monovalent cation typically administered as carbonate or citrate salts.123 Classified as both a mood stabilizer and antidepressant, it is primarily used in the management of mood disorders.14 Unlike most psychiatric medications, which are complex organic compounds, lithium is a simple elemental ion, making it pharmacologically unique within its therapeutic class.23

Dosage & Duration
Subjective Effects
Lithium does not produce an acute recreational or psychedelic experience; its subjective effects emerge gradually over days to weeks of consistent dosing. The defining feature is mood stabilization, in which the extreme highs and lows of bipolar disorder are dampened toward a more even emotional baseline, alongside antidepressant effects. Many users describe the state as emotionally quieter rather than euphoric, and some report a subtle dulling of affect or cognition at therapeutic levels.
Physical
Physical effects at therapeutic doses commonly include a fine hand tremor, increased thirst and urination, mild nausea, and fatigue or sedation, especially early in treatment.
Uncomfortable
Side effects are most prominent when starting treatment or at higher blood concentrations.
Cognitive
The headspace is characterized by a flattening of emotional extremes and a steadier, less reactive mood. Some individuals experience mild cognitive slowing or a sense of emotional blunting, particularly at higher therapeutic concentrations.
Suppressions
Rather than producing an altered state, lithium gradually evens out mood, which some experience as emotional blunting.

Lithium's biological effects are thought to stem primarily from the ability of the monovalent lithium ion (Li⁺) to compete with endogenous ions, particularly sodium (Na⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺), whose ionic radius (86 pm) closely approximates that of lithium (90 pm).5 Lithium enters cells through sodium transport mechanisms, including both voltage-gated and epithelial sodium channels as well as ligand-gated ion channels, and can cross nuclear and mitochondrial membranes.5 It can also enter and partially block potassium and calcium channels without permeating them.5 The full mechanisms underlying lithium's mood-stabilizing and antidepressant effects remain only partially understood.67
