Chronic use is considered moderately addictive and has high abuse potential. Some users may develop psychological dependence, and once dependence is established, abrupt cessation may lead to cravings and withdrawal effects.

Moderate

Regular or extended use may lead to physical dependence similar to cocaine. Discontinuation can produce a 'crash' along with withdrawal symptoms including paranoia, depression, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, and intense cravings. These symptoms can persist for weeks or months.

Toxicity

Cardiovascular

Due to structural similarity to cocaine, high doses may present serious cardiac risks including sudden cardiac death from effects on cardiac sodium channels; chronic use may potentially result in cardiomyopathy similar to that seen with long-term cocaine use.

Nasal/Upper Respiratory

Regular insufflation is suspected to cause adverse effects on the nostrils, nose, and nasal cavities including loss of smell, nosebleeds, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and chronically runny nose.

Central Nervous System

Extended use or abuse is likely to cause both short and long-term downregulation of monoamine receptor systems.

Psychosis Risk

Moderate

While little is known specifically about dichloropane's ability to induce psychosis due to its limited history of human use, it is reasonable to assume similar risks to cocaine and other dopaminergic stimulants when abused at high doses or for prolonged periods. Some users report symptoms similar to schizophrenia including scattered or incoherent thinking, as well as tactile hallucinations described as 'coke bugs'.
