Tropane

Tropane alkaloids are a chemical class of organic compounds defined by the tropane ring system, a bicyclic structure in which a nitrogen-containing bridge spans a seven-membered carbon ring, formally a fused pyrrolidine and piperidine sharing two carbons with an N-methyl bridge. Members carry various groups esterified or attached to this bicyclic core, and the choice of these groups determines the pharmacology. The class spans dopaminergic stimulants as well as anticholinergic deliriants that block the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. The rigid bridged tropane skeleton is the common structural feature uniting the class.
