2-Benzylbenzimidazole (nitazenes)
Nitazenes are a chemical class of organic compounds derived from the core benzimidazole structure, built on a 2-benzylbenzimidazole scaffold. First developed in the 1950s and re-emerging as novel synthetic opioids, they act as agonists at the mu-opioid receptor. Several members exceed fentanyl in potency, giving the class an extreme overdose risk. The 2-benzylbenzimidazole core with its characteristic nitro group is the defining structural feature of the family.
