Generic structure

Benzimidazoles are a chemical class of organic compounds derived from the core amine structure, consisting of fused benzene and imidazole heterocycles. Members differ by substituents on the ring system and on the attached groups. In psychoactive chemistry the family matters chiefly as the parent of the nitazene opioids, which act as potent agonists at the mu-opioid receptor. The fused benzene-imidazole ring system is the defining structural feature of the class.
