Benzofuranethylamine (benzofurans)

Substituted benzofurans are a chemical class of organic compounds derived from the core phenethylamine structure and based on the benzofuran ring system, a benzene ring fused to a five-membered oxygen-containing furan ring. In the psychoactive members this fused ring system replaces the methylenedioxyphenyl portion of compounds like MDA, with an aminopropyl sidechain attached. They are therefore close structural relatives of the amphetamines and phenethylamines, differing mainly by the benzofuran ring in place of a simpler substituted benzene. Most members behave as entactogens or stimulants with a serotonergic character.
