Marinol

Under the Controlled Substances Act and 21 CFR § 1308.13(g)(1), FDA-approved synthetic dronabinol in sesame oil in a soft gelatin capsule, sold as Marinol, is listed in Schedule III under controlled-substance code 7369. This classification has applied since July 2, 1999, and subjects the qualifying formulation's manufacture, distribution, importation, exportation, and dispensing to Schedule III controls. It generally may be dispensed to an ultimate user only under a written or oral prescription, unless a practitioner dispenses it directly. The Marinol listing is formulation-specific; FDA-approved dronabinol oral solution is listed in Schedule II, while specified naturally derived delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinols have separately been listed in Schedule III under 21 CFR § 1308.13(g)(4) since April 28, 2026.

Colombia lists dronabinol, chemically identified as the (6aR,10aR) delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol stereoisomer, in Lista Verde II under Resolución 315 de 2020, as modified by Resolución 116 de 2026. Its prescribing, dispensing, import, export, manufacture, distribution, and sale are controlled, and only legally practising physicians and veterinarians may prescribe controlled medicines using the official prescription form. The listing controls dronabinol as an active substance; it is not a marketing authorization for the Marinol brand.

Italy's medicinal schedule lists trans-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol under the alternate name dronabinol in section B. Pharmacists may prepare and dispense magistral preparations containing dronabinol only on a prescription renewed for each dispensing.
