Ethchlorvynol has significant abuse potential, leading to its discontinuation from production in 1999 due to widespread abuse. As a habit-forming GABAA receptor agonist, regular use commonly results in drug dependency.

Regular use results in physical addiction. Abrupt cessation of long-term use can cause potentially lethal withdrawal effects resembling alcohol or barbiturate withdrawal, including convulsions, hallucinations, and amnesia.
