Substituted piperazines are a chemical class of organic compounds defined by the piperazine ring, a six-membered ring containing two nitrogen atoms positioned opposite each other in the 1,4 arrangement. Psychoactive members carry substituents on one or both nitrogens, broadly splitting into benzylpiperazines, which attach a benzyl group, and phenylpiperazines, which attach a phenyl ring directly, often with halogen or trifluoromethyl groups. Members act across several categories, with some behaving as stimulants and others as more serotonergic agents. The shared two-nitrogen ring with an attached aromatic group is the structural hallmark of the class.
