2,5-DMA is expressly listed as 2,5-dimethoxyamphetamine in federal Schedule I under 21 C.F.R. § 1308.11(d)(4), with controlled-substance code 7396; the DEA also identifies DMA and 2,5-DMA as other names. Because it is itself a controlled substance, it is excluded from the statutory definition of a controlled substance analogue, so analogue treatment is not the basis of its federal classification. Subject to the authorizations and exceptions in the Controlled Substances Act, federal law prohibits its possession, manufacture, distribution, dispensing, and possession with intent to manufacture, distribute, or dispense. This classification concerns federal law only and does not establish its status under state, territorial, District of Columbia, or local law.

2,5-DMA is listed by the exact name Dimethoxyamfetamin (DMA), chemically identified as 1-(2,5-Dimethoxyphenyl)propan-2-ylazan, in Anlage I of the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG). Anlage I classifies it as a non-marketable narcotic drug, although the Federal Institute may exceptionally authorize it for scientific or other public-interest purposes. Under § 29(1) BtMG, unauthorized production, trade, import, export, sale, supply, acquisition, procurement, and possession without written acquisition authorization are punishable by up to five years' imprisonment or a fine. The NpSG is not the operative classification because it excludes narcotic drugs listed under § 1(1) BtMG.

The current BetmVV-EDI lists 2,5-Dimethoxyamphetamin (DMA) in Annex 5, Verzeichnis d, as a prohibited controlled substance. Unauthorized cultivation, production, storage, shipment, transport, import, export, transit, sale, prescribing, supply, placing on the market, possession, and acquisition are punishable under Article 19(1) of the BetmG by imprisonment for up to three years or a monetary penalty. The Federal Office of Public Health may grant exceptional authorizations for handling Verzeichnis d substances.

2,5-DMA is covered as a Class A drug by the generic phenethylamine provision in Part I of Schedule 2 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It is 1-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)propan-2-amine, an alpha-methylphenethylamine bearing two methoxy ring substituents, and falls within paragraph 1(c)'s structural class. Neither the methoxyphenamine exclusion nor the exclusion for compounds already named in paragraph 1(a) applies. This phenethylamine class has been controlled since 20 September 1977. Unauthorized possession, production, supply, and offering to supply are prohibited under sections 4 and 5 of the Act.
