Propofol

Current DailyMed records classify branded DIPRIVAN and generic propofol injectable emulsion products as human prescription drugs and report DEA Schedule: None. Under § 503(b) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, covered drugs may be dispensed only by prescription and must bear the designation "Rx only." A separate Genixus repackaged propofol 1% record is categorized as a human prescription drug label but carries the marketing status "unapproved drug other" and FDA's nonapproval disclaimer; specified NDCs have been inactivated through compliance action, while other package records show no marketing end date. This federal classification does not determine separate state, district, territorial, tribal, or local restrictions.

In Canada, propofol is listed without qualification on the federal Prescription Drug List for human use and is a prescription drug. Under the Food and Drug Regulations, it may be sold only by a person entitled under provincial law to dispense prescription drugs and under a received verbal or written prescription, subject to the section C.01.043 exception. The listing took effect on 19 December 2013; these federal provisions restrict sale rather than establishing a general offence for ordinary possession.

TİTCK's licensed-products register dated 28 August 2026 lists multiple propofol intravenous injection or infusion emulsions with non-suspended licences, including Propofol-Haver 1% 200 mg/20 ml under licence 2025/312. Under articles 2, 4(c), and 6(d) of the Beşeri Tıbbi Ürünlerin Sınıflandırılmasına Dair Yönetmelik, Ministry-licensed human medicinal products normally administered parenterally are prescription-only and obtainable only by prescription. The regulation has been in force since 30 June 2005.
