Harm Potential

Toxicity

Gastrointestinal

Naproxen can cause heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, and stomach bleeding; boxed warnings address gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.

Cardiovascular

NSAIDs are linked to serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke; naproxen is described as having the smallest overall cardiovascular risk among compared NSAIDs.

Renal

Heavy use is linked to kidney failure, including end-stage renal disease, and renal toxicity is listed among adverse effects.

Reproductive and developmental

Avoid naproxen in the third trimester; from 30 weeks onward it is contraindicated because it may prematurely close the fetal ductus arteriosus.
