Pharmacology
Caution
Use cautionThese combinations are not usually physically harmful, but may produce undesirable effects, such as physical discomfort or overstimulation. Extreme use may cause physical health issues. Synergistic effects may be unpredictable. Care should be taken when choosing to use this combination.

Addiction & Dependence
Psychological
Extremely LowLong-term N-acetylcysteine use is not generally associated with addiction or psychological dependence. Its beneficial effects appear to accumulate over time rather than producing acute reinforcement.
Toxicity
Large doses in animal models have shown potential for pulmonary artery hypertension and right ventricular strain; however, the doses used were dramatically higher than typical human doses, equivalent to approximately 20 grams per day.
When taken four hours after alcohol consumption, N-acetylcysteine may worsen liver damage in a dose-dependent manner, though it is protective when taken before alcohol exposure.
Inhalational formulations may cause bronchoconstriction and bronchospasm in some patients; these reactions occur unpredictably and infrequently.
Oral administration commonly causes nausea and vomiting; stomatitis and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage have also been reported.
