Generic structure

Carbamates are a chemical class of organic compounds that are esters of carbamic acid, bearing a nitrogen atom linked to a carbonyl and an oxygen. Members differ by the groups attached to the nitrogen and the ester oxygen. Historically the family was important as sedative-hypnotics and muscle relaxants acting on the central nervous system. The carbamic acid ester linkage is the defining feature of the class.
