Noble gases are a chemical class of chemically inert monatomic elements that exist as single atoms rather than bonded molecules. Because they do not readily form chemical bonds, they have no substituents or scaffold to vary. Despite this inertness, one heavier member acts as an NMDA-antagonist anaesthetic at elevated partial pressures, producing dissociative and anaesthetic effects. Their monatomic, unreactive nature distinguishes them entirely from the organic families described elsewhere.
