Generic structure

Ethers are a chemical class of organic compounds in which an oxygen atom bridges two carbon-bearing groups. Members differ by the identity of the two groups flanking that oxygen. Several volatile ethers act as central nervous system depressants and anaesthetics, and one was among the first anaesthetics and recreational depressants ever used. The oxygen bridge between two carbon groups is the defining structural feature of the class.
